Here’s a list of exterior home features you might not know about!

Think you know every part of your home’s exterior?

You might be surprised! Many homeowners struggle to name all the pieces that make up the outside of their house—and that’s okay.

With more than 5 years in the business,

has seen it all (and cleaned it all!).

Roof & Upper Structure

  1. Shingles-These overlapping tiles form the roof’s outer layer, protecting your home from wind, rain, and sun. Asphalt shingles are the most common type, though metal and composite options are also popular.

  2. Ridge- The ridge is the highest horizontal line where two roof slopes meet. It often includes a ridge vent to allow warm air to escape from the attic.

  3. Gable- The triangular wall section between the edges of a sloped roof is called a gable. It adds character to a home’s shape and provides space for attic ventilation.

  4. Hip-Where two downward-sloping roof planes meet at an angle, you’ll find a hip. This feature helps guide rainwater toward the gutters.

  1. Dormer-Dormers are small roof projections that house windows, often used to add light and space to attics or upper rooms.

  1. Rake- The slanted edge of a gable roof is known as the rake. It runs from the eave to the ridge and can be trimmed for a clean, finished appearance.

  1. Drip Edge- This thin metal flashing sits along the roof’s edge, directing water away from the fascia and into the gutters to prevent rot and water damage.

  1. Flashing- Flashing is a protective barrier—often made of metal—installed around joints, chimneys, and vents to keep water from seeping into the structure.

Eaves, Overhangs & Trim Work

  1. Eave- The eave is the part of the roof that extends beyond the home’s walls. Its main purpose is to carry rainwater away from the siding and foundation.

  1. Soffit- Found underneath the eave, soffits enclose the overhang and often feature vents that allow fresh air to circulate into the attic.

  2. Fascia- The fascia board runs horizontally where the roof meets the outer walls, providing a mounting point for gutters and a neat visual finish.

  3. Frieze Board- This horizontal trim board sits just below the soffit, bridging the gap between the siding and roofline for a polished look.

Box EndAt the end of a gable, the box end encloses and finishes off the roof’s overhang. It provides a clean transition between the roofline and siding.

    Walls, Siding & Corners

  4. Siding- Siding acts as your home’s skin—shielding it from weather while defining its appearance. Common materials include vinyl, wood, brick, and fiber cement.

  1. Corner Post- Installed on exterior corners, these posts reinforce and seal where two siding panels meet, protecting edges from impact and moisture.

  2. Trim- Trim frames windows, doors, and edges for a finished, cohesive look. It comes in many styles and materials like wood, PVC, and aluminum.

    Windows & Doors

  1. Windows- let in natural light and ventilation. Modern designs may feature double-pane glass, energy-efficient coatings, and decorative grilles.

  1. Doors- Exterior doors serve both form and function, providing entry points and adding curb appeal. They can swing, slide, or even fold, depending on the style.

  2. Shutters- Traditionally used to protect windows from storms, shutters now serve mostly as decorative accents that enhance a home’s character.

  1. Header- Above each window or door sits a header—a structural beam or decorative trim that supports the weight above the opening.

  1. Apron- The apron is a piece of trim located just below a window sill, adding a visual border and helping to blend the window with the siding.

  1. Grid (or Grille)-These decorative dividers create the appearance of multiple windowpanes. Some are built inside the glass, while others are placed on top for style.

    Water Management & Drainage

  1. Gutters- Mounted along the roofline, gutters collect rainwater and channel it toward downspouts. Keeping them clean helps prevent water damage to siding and foundations.

  2. Gutter Guards-Optional but useful, gutter guards keep leaves and debris out of the system, reducing the need for frequent cleaning.

DownspoutsAttached vertically to gutters, downspouts guide water safely down and away from your home’s foundation.

Structural Elements

  1. Foundation- The base of your home, typically concrete or masonry, supports the entire structure and distributes its weight evenly into the ground.

  2. Columns Vertical supports—often seen on porches or entryways—combine strength with style, helping hold up roofs or overhangs.

    Outdoor Spaces

  3. Porch- An elevated, roofed space at the front or back of a home, porches offer a welcoming area for relaxing or greeting guests.

  4. Patio- Usually built at ground level, patios are open outdoor areas made of concrete, stone, or pavers—perfect for outdoor dining or lounging.

  1. Steps- Steps provide safe access to elevated spaces such as porches or decks. They’re commonly made of wood, brick, or concrete.

  2. Railing- Installed around decks, stairs, and porches, railings add safety and architectural detail.

  3. Driveway- The main access route from the street to your home, driveways are typically made of concrete, asphalt, or decorative stone.

  4. Sidewalk- Sidewalks create clear, sturdy walkways that connect driveways, patios, and entryways for easy navigation around your property.
