Do you wonder what those black streaks are on your roof?
Gloeocapsa magma is a type of tiny bacteria that grows on roofs and makes black streaks. It likes warm, humid places and spreads easily. It eats the limestone in roof shingles, which is why it shows up there, and happens overtime (not in days)
Can gloeocapsa magma damage my roof?
Yes — black streaks can damage your roof by weakening the shingles and trapping moisture that leads to further growth like moss and lichens.
The bacteria also hold moisture on the surface, creating a damp environment where moss and lichens can grow. Their root-like structures push under the shingles, loosen them, and trap even more water. Over time, this can cause the roof to wear out faster and may lead to bigger problems if it’s not treated.

How do you get rid of them?
In order to get rid of those streaks, you will need to call a professional, you would need to treat it as an infestation, once algae starts, it will not stop untill it's treated. Luckily, Hydros Power Washing can take care of your roof if you are having issues. We take care of mold growing on the outside of your home, algae, moss, lichen,
ect.

How does Hydros Power Washing wash roofs?
With our special cleaning solutions and a gentle, low-pressure rinse, we can safely clean your roof and get rid of the Gloeocapsa magma. After the cleaner is sprayed on, the bacteria loosen up and can be rinsed away, taking the dark streaks with them. Any moss or lichens on the roof will fade to white and naturally fall off over the next few weeks.
